The short story: Junior rightfielder
Anderson Fulk blasted a two-run, walk-off home run in the ninth to send VCU to a series-opening win over Davidson Friday at The Diamond.
Â
LEADING OFF
- Fulk finished his day 2-for-6 with three RBI, while redshirt junior second baseman Griffin Boone recorded a 3-for-5 performance at the plate. Boone scored three times
- Junior third baseman Brandon Eike also logged a 3-for-4 day at the plate for the Rams, who touched up Davidson pitching for 15 hits
- Sophomore centerfielder Aden Hill launched his fourth home run of the season for the Black and Gold. He was 2-for-4 overall and drove in three. He scored twice
- Senior shortstop William Bean also homered and racked up three hits for VCU
- Hampden-Sydney graduate transfer Owen Tappy (5-1) tossed two perfect innings of relief to earn the win for VCU. He struck out four
THE STRETCH
- VCU erased an 8-4 deficit with two runs each in the fourth, sixth and ninth innings. In the ninth, with the score tied at 8-8, Boone reached base via hit-by-pitch with one out. Moments later, Fulk stepped to the plate and sent the first pitch he saw over the right centerfield fence to give the Rams their third straight victory
- The Rams tied the game in the bottom half of the sixth with a pair of runs. Eike led off with a bloop double to left field, and Hill followed with a walk. Two batters later, freshman first baseman Chris McHugh and redshirt junior designated hitter Jake Thilges roped back-to-back RBI singles to left
- Bean helped give the Rams a 3-2 lead in the second with a solo homer to left center. Following a three-run Davidson third, Hill led off the bottom of the frame with a no-doubt solo blast to right to pull the Black and Gold within 5-4
- The VCU bullpen shut out the Wildcats for the final five innings
