RAMS EXTINGUISH FLAMES IN MIDWEEK ACTION

Score: VCU 2, Liberty 1
Location: Richmond, Va. (The Diamond)
Records: VCU 24-13, Liberty 17-19

The short story: Sophomore right fielder Aden Hill doubled home the deciding run, while three VCU pitchers combined to shut down Liberty in midweek action Tuesday at The Diamond.

LEADING OFF
  • Freshman designated hitter Trent Adelman, in just his third collegiate start, provided an RBI double for the Rams and finished 1-for-4
  • VCU senior third baseman Brandon Eike turned in a 1-for-3 night. He doubled, scored and reached base twice
  • Senior shortstop William Bean also singled and walked, while Hill finished his day 1-for-4 for the Black and Gold
  • Redshirt junior righthander Jack Hoeymans (1-1) earned his first win of the season for the Rams via three shutout innings. He struck out two and surrendered three hits. Graduate righty Owen Tappy picked up his third save of the season behind 2.2 no-hit innings of relief for VCU
THE STRETCH
  • VCU broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the second. Graduate first baseman Eli Weisner stroked a one-out single and came around to score one batter later when Adelman ripped his second double of the season into the left centerfield gap
  • The Rams extended their advantage to 2-0 on back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the third by Eike and Hill
  • The Flames cut VCU's lead in half with an RBI double in the seventh, but Tappy came on in relief with one out and a man on second and retired the side to keep Liberty at bay
  • The VCU trio of Hoeymans, Tappy and senior lefty Campbell Ellis combined to limit the Flames to six base hits. They did not allow an earned run in the contest
  • The Rams improved to 16-4 at home this season with Tuesday's victory
NEXT UP
