Score: Dayton 5, VCU 1
Location: Richmond, Va. (The Diamond)
Records: VCU 24-14 (6-4 Atlantic 10), Dayton 25-13 (7-3)

The short story: VCU couldn't find a rhythm offensively, leaving 11 on base in the first game of its Atlantic 10 Conference series against Dayton Friday night at the Diamond.

LEADING OFF
  • Sophomore right fielder Aden Hill delivered at the plate to lead the Rams, going 3-for-3 with a double and two singles
  • Graduate outfielder Eli Weisner managed a 2-for-4 night, bringing Hill home on an RBI double for VCU's lone run
  • Nic Ericsson, Ethan Ianuzzi, and Casey Kleinman each contributed a hit for the Black and Gold
  • VCU sophomore righthander Brian Curley struck out five and allowed just two runs in 5.1 innings of relief
THE STRETCH
  • Dayton got off to a hot start, with a couple of singles to set up a score on a sac fly for a 1-0 advantage in the top half of the first
  • VCU answered in the second with, a pair of doubles from Hill and Weisner to tie the game at 1-1
  • Dayton manufactured runs in the third and fourth to retake the lead and never looked back
  • Ericsson and Kleinman both reached base in the ninth to stage a comeback, but a groundout to first ended the rally for VCU
