VCU DROPS MIDWEEK CONTEST TO TRIBE, 6-3

The short story: A late VCU rally fell short as the Rams were unable to overcome an early deficit against William & Mary.

LEADING OFF
  • VCU senior pitcher Campbell Ellis pitched 2 and 1/3 innings, striking out four of the 11 batters he faced while surrendering just one run
  • Sophomore pitcher Cam Nuckols pitched two scoreless innings with two strikeouts
  • Junior outfielder Anderson Fulk went 1-for-3 with an RBI
  • Senior infielder Brandon Eike also went 1-for-3 with an RBI on a sacrifice fly, a play that ultimately scored two runs on an error by the Tribe
  • William & Mary was paced by a three-run homer by Ben Parker
THE STRETCH
  • The first inning was a pitching battle, both teams recorded one hit with the Tribe leaving one runner on. The Rams loaded the bases with two outs after a hit, hit by pitch and a walk but VCU was unable to score
  • William & Mary got on the board first in the top of the second inning, scoring two runs on a single to center field with two outs by Josiah Seguin
  • Neither team was able to push across a run in the third or fourth inning with Vaughan and Ellis each throwing a scoreless inning for the Rams  
  • The Tribe went up 3-0 on a solo home run by Joe Delossantos who was ejected following the run
  • William & Mary went up 6-0 on a three-run homer by Parker in the top of the seventh inning
  • VCU got a run back in the bottom of the seventh inning after a Benzin groundout plated graduate outfielder Ethan Iannuzzi
  • The Rams got two more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to get within 6-3 after a sacrifice fly from Eike was dropped by the Tribe, allowing two runs to cross
  • VCU held the Tribe scoreless the final two innings but was unable to score again and complete the comeback

The Rams return to the Diamond on Thurs., March 28 to open Atlantic 10 play against UMass at 6 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
