Score: Elon 12, VCU 11
Location: Richmond, Va. (Cary Street Field)
Records: VCU 0-2, Elon 2-1

The short story: Juniors Mia George and Ashley Karn supplied three goals apiece for VCU, but Rams were unable to hold off comeback-minded Elon Saturday in their home opener at Cary Street Field.

QUICK FACTS
  • Karn converted on three of her five shot opportunities on the day. She also collected a pair of ground balls
  • George added her first three goals of the season on five attempts and assisted on another VCU score
  • Senior Kelsey McDonnell also supplied a pair of goals and an assist to the VCU cause
  • Junior keeper Ahnika Eberl was credited with eight saves in goal for the Rams
  • Ana Lee Vandiver sparked the Phoenix with six goals and an assist
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Vandiver scored twice as Elon rang up five unanswered goals in the late third and early fourth quarters, to grab a 12-9 lead with 3:55 remaining. Late scores by George and Karn pulled the Rams within 12-11 in the waning moments, but VCU could get no closer
  • George connected on two first-quarter goals as the Rams stormed to a 6-1 advantage. But Elon responded by pitching a 6-0 shutout in the second, backed by two goals each from Vandiver and Cierra Hopson, to charge to a 7-6 lead at the half
  • A trio of goals by Karn, sophomore Jamie Lastner and senior Autumn Kash provided VCU with a short-lived 9-7 edge in the third
  • Elon outshot VCU 30-22
