RAMS FALL TO NO. 23 DAYTON 3-0

Score: #23 Dayton 3, VCU 0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-19)
Location: Richmond, Va. (Stuart C. Siegel Center)
Records: VCU 4-6 (2-1 A-10), Dayton 13-1 (3-0)

The short story: VCU junior outside hitters Julia Rienks and Kalina Pylinska combined for 16 kills, but it did little to slow down a ranked Dayton squad Friday night at the Siegel Center.

OPENING VOLLEY
  • Pylinska spiked eight kills for the Black and Gold. She also provided seven digs
  • Rienks matched Pylinska with eight kills and also kicked in a pair of blocks, as well as five digs
  • Freshman Lara Del Core supplied four kills and an ace off the bench for the Rams, while sophomore libero Anja Kujundzic was credited with 10 digs and three assists
  • Dayton's Lexie Almodovar led all players with 13 kills, while hitting .435. Teammate Taylor Russell added 11 kills and three blocks
THE DIFFERENCE
  • Dayton hit .330 on the night, while VCU registered a .051 mark. The Flyers hit .375 and .370 in the first and second sets, respectively on the way to a commanding 2-0 lead in the match
  • The Flyers also outblocked VCU 9-3 and recorded 42 digs to VCU's 32
  • In addition to hitting .375 in the first set, Dayton cashed in on 12-of-13 sideout opportunities to prevent the Rams from gaining traction
  • In the second, a kill by Pylinska pulled the Rams even with the Flyers at 10-10. But Dayton outscored VCU 15-7 the rest of the way, including three kills by Russell, to salt away a 25-17 win
