Location: Richmond, Va.
Records: VCU 2-0, Kent State 0-2

The Short Story: VCU and Kent State battled back-and-forth through the contest before Morena Macera's 37th minute goal off a penalty corner proved to be the difference.

QUICK FACTS:
  • Macera scored her first collegiate goal and the game-winner on her lone shot attempt
  • Mora Marrero recorded an assist on the insert, her second assist in as many games
  • VCU outshot Kent State in shots on goal 6-4 but the Golden Flashes held an 8-7 edge overall
  • Kent State also led in penalty corners 7-3 but VCU's defense held for the shutout
  • Sheridan Messier made four saves to earn the win

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The two teams were deadlocked in the first half, splitting possession but the Rams recorded the only shot attempt of the first quarter as Maggie Goodwin's effort was saved in the 11th minute
  • Kent State had back-to-back-to-back chances off penalty corners in the 21st minute but Messier saved all three efforts to keep the game 0-0
  • VCU broke the deadlock midway through the third quarter as Macera took a short corner from Marrero and fired her shot past the keeper
  • Messier made just one save in the fourth quarter as VCU's defense held off Kent State
