The Short Story: VCU Baseball dropped its midweek game at Longwood, despite battling back twice to tie and or take the lead in the game, but three unanswered Lancer runs over the final two innings coupled with missed opportunities cost the Rams a chance at the season sweep over Longwood.
Â
LEADING OFF:Â
- The Rams tied it at three in the fifth and took the lead in the seventh but both times Longwood answered in the bottom half to pull away both times.
- VCU left 14 runners on base, missing several opportunities to blow open the game earlier and often.
- AJ Mathis again continued his hot bat, going 2-for-4 with his sixth double in the last 11 games and he knocked in two runs while drawing a pair of walks.
- William Bean smacked a solo home run, tying for the team lead with his seventh of the season.
- Mathis (six); Brandon Eike (four); Jacob Selden (two); Cooper Benzin (four); Nic Ericsson (two) and Logan Amiss (three) all extended their hit streaks.
- Evan Bert got the start and tossed 3.1 innings, giving up two earned runs.
HOW IT HAPPENED:Â
- Longwood opened the game with a two-run home run in the first inning to take a quick 2-0 lead.
- Bean answered in the third with a solo shot to right on an 0-1 pitch to get the Rams on the board.
- The Lancers answered with a run in the third to make it 3-1.
- VCU tied things up in the fifth, scoring two runs on a bases-loaded walk by Jake Thilges (Bean) and Benzin's bases-loaded hit-by-pitch (Eike). But the Rams, who loaded the bases with one out, could only get the two runs over as the final two batters stuck out to end the frame and VCU's threat.
- With the score knotted at 3-3, Longwood retook the lead in the bottom half of the fifth, smacking an RBI single and scoring on a fielder's choice to make it 5-3.
- Responding quickly, Ericsson crossed the plate for VCU on Eike's sacrifice fly and the quick answer pulled VCU within one run at 5-4.
- In the seventh the Rams had their biggest blow of the game, looking at two outs and a pair of runners on, Mathis stepped to the dish.
- After seeing a pair of pitches Mathis took the 1-1 pitch and smashed it to right center for a two-RBI double, scoring Amiss and a hustling Ericsson from first.
- The clutch hit from Mathis put the Rams ahead 6-5, a lead that was short lived.
- In the seventh and the eighth Longwood scored three runs, two in the seventh to retake the lead and one in the eighth for insurance.
- VCU did put a pair of runners on in the ninth, but the gap was too much for the Rams as the final out was recorded to finish off Longwood's midweek game win.
UP NEXT: VCU returns home for its final home weekend of the season when they welcome cross-town rivals Richmond from May 12-14.
Sunday is senior day and the Rams will honor their seven seniors;
Scottie O'Bryan; Mathis;
Mason Delane; Selden;

Art Schoenstadt.
