The short story: Junior
Lauryn Taylor bagged three gold medals and a school record, while senior
Jocelyn Midkiff was dominant in the throws to lead VCU to a runner-up finish Sunday at the Atlantic 10 Conference Championships. Taylor and Midkiff were named Most Outstanding Track and Most Outstanding Field Performer, respectively, for their efforts.
Â
SPRINTS
- Taylor won the 100 and 200-meter runs and helped VCU's 4x100-meter relay team to meet and school records in a dazzling final day. The Florissant, Mo. native teamed with senior Lauryn Freeman, graduate Symone Foster and freshman Kayelyn Tate on a blistering 44.86 mark in the relay to open the day. That effort broke and 11-year-old VCU record of 45.20 in the event and lowered the meet mark, previously held by Charlotte since 2009, by .08 seconds. Taylor later ran a facility record 11.56 in the 100 and 23.98 in the 200 on the way to comfortable victories
- Senior Symone Foster lowered her own school record in the 100-meter hurdles for the second straight week when she crossed the tape in 13.54 on the way to a second-place finish. Freeman (13.71) claimed the bronze
- Tate also earned silver behind Taylor in the 100 in 11.71
- Freshman Jaylin Pate ran a personal-best 24.59 to place fifth in the 200Â
THROWS
- Midkiff won both the shot put and the discus in convincing fashion. The senior from Narrows, Va. heaved the shot 14.50 meters on her second try, and the mark held up for the victory. Megan Wood of Rhode Island was second at 14.07m. A short time later, Midkiff uncorked a personal-best 53.29-meter toss on her first attempt in the discus circle. That mark would go virtually unchallenged by the field. George Mason's Maya Stanley placed second at 44.75m
JUMPS
- Senior Raquel Hawkins jumped a personal-best 12.46 meters to place fourth for VCU in the triple jump. Freshman Chelsea Davis followed in fifth (12.30m), while Rams' sophomore Sydney Carr was eighth (11.79m)
DISTANCE
Redshirt freshman
Lauren Tunnell clocked a personal-best 4:30.97 to take sixth in the 1,500. She's the third Ram in school history to run 4:30 or better in the event
