RAMS LOSE DOUBLEHEADER AT RHODE ISLAND

GAME ONE
Final Score: Rhode Island 7, VCU 5
Winning Pitcher: Trystan Levesque (6-4)
Losing Pitcher: Brian Curley (2-3)
Save: Ryan Andrade (7)
Location: Kingston, R.I. (Bill Beck Field)
Records: VCU 25-29 (11-12), Rhode Island 22-27 (12-11)

The Short Story: In the first game of Friday's doubleheader, VCU Baseball nearly mounted a comeback to keep the season going, but three late runs by Rhode Island, including an insurance run in the eighth, ended the VCU Baseball season in heartbreaking fashion.

LEADING OFF:
  • VCU went down early but began to build a picket fence to get back in the middle innings, scoring at least one run from the fifth to the eighth innings.
  • But two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth by Rhode Island allowed them to maintain the lead they needed to clinch the final spot in the Atlantic 10 tournament.
  • Brandon Eike, Cooper Benzin and Logan Amiss all had two-hit games.
  • For Eike it was his 22nd multi-hit game of the season; Benzin had his 19th and Amiss recorded his ninth multi-hit game.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Rhode Island opened the game with a solo home run in the first, to take an early 1-0 lead.
  • The game remained 1-0 until the fifth when VCU began to show its fight, building a picket fence over the next three innings.
  • The fence began to be built in the fifth when the Rams got on the board thanks to Amiss scoring on a passed ball to tie the game.
  • In the sixth Benzin singled in Eike and Nic Ericsson scored in the seventh.
  • During the bottom of the fifth, Rhode Island had retaken the lead, one they would not give back. Scoring three runs on an RBI double from Anthony DePino and a two-RBI triple from Eric Genther.
  • And in the seventh, with VCU having gotten within one run at 4-3, Rhode Island hit back-to-back home runs to extend the lead out to 6-3.
  • The Rams did not go away, battling through the eighth to score a pair of runs and again get within one run.
  • Ericsson recorded a sacrifice fly to score Benzin and Amiss came home on another wild pitch to make it 6-5.
  • But an insurance run in the bottom half of the eighth from Rhode Island put the game just out of VCU's reach and the 7-5 win for Rhode Island clinched its spot in the A-10 tournament, eliminating VCU in the process.

Losing Pitcher: Justin Walton (0-2)

  • VCU got back-to-back scoreless frames from Kyras Dawson and Maison Martinez.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Rhode Island scored at least one run over the first six innings to build out the lead they needed to win the game.
  • VCU first scored in the second on an Amiss RBI double to right center and added a pair of runs on RBI base hits by Hill and Eike.
  • The Rams added one in the fifth when Bean scored and in the seventh Eike knocked in Hill, Bean scored on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball for the final run of the game.
