The Short Story: VCU Baseball mounted a comeback in the middle innings, tying the game in the sixth, but five runs in the bottom half of the sixth from Saint Joseph's ended the VCU comeback and cost the Rams the game at Smithson Field.
Â
LEADING OFF:Â
- VCU scored a run in the fifth and two in the sixth to storm back from an early 3-0 deficit, but the Hawks pulled back ahead in the bottom of the sixth with a five spot and in the eighth they added four more to finish the game.
- AJ Mathis had a solid day leading off, going 2-for-4 with one run scored and a stolen base.
- Both Will Carlone (two-run) and William Bean (solo) had home runs in the game.
- Zachary Peters got the start and went five innings, giving up six runs and striking out three.
- James Gladden tossed 1.1 innings and Kyras Dawson threw 1.2 innings, both in relief.
HOW IT HAPPENED:Â
- Saint Joseph's scored a run in the first inning and two in the third to take an early 3-0 lead in the game.
- In the fifth, VCU got on the board. Stepping into the box with one out, Bean took a pitch to left that kept carrying until it carried over the wall, putting the score at 3-1.
- Peters had his best inning of work in the bottom half of the fifth, sitting the Hawks down in order to keep it at 3-1.
- Mathis led off the top half of the sixth with a base hit. Carlone then took his hacks with one out on the board, and after seeing a few pitches smashed a letter-high fastball into left for a pair of runs to tie the game at 3-3.
- Unfortunately for the Rams that would be the last runs they scored in the game. In the bottom half of the sixth the Hawks retook the lead with five runs on four hits, making it 8-3.
- The Hawks added four more in the eighth, but three-straight frames without scoring a run to end the game for VCU meant that the Hawks had come away with a 12-3 win.
UP NEXT: The Rams and Hawks finish their A-10 weekend series with a 12 p.m. start tomorrow (Apr. 9) at Smithson Field.
