The Short Story: Behind a massive grand slam from William Bean, VCU Baseball stormed back in the final three innings, scoring all 11 runs after the sixth inning to catch and pass Atlantic 10 foe Saint Joseph's in the final laps of Sunday's getaway game at Smithson Field.

LEADING OFF:
  • The Rams scored six runs in the seventh, two in the eighth and three in the ninth to complete the comeback.
  • Bean had the big knock in the game, hitting a grand slam in the seventh for his lone hit on the day.
  • Bean's grand slam was the third of the season for VCU, with Brandon Eike and Logan Amiss each hitting one earlier this year.
  • Cooper Benzin led the day for the VCU offense, going 4-for-5 with three RBIs and one double.
  • AJ Mathis again was a table setter, drawing five walks in the leadoff spot. Mathis scored three runs and had a stolen base, his 12th of the season.
  • Mathis becomes only the eighth player in the country this season to draw at least five walks in a game.
  • Eike had a multi-hit day, going 2-for-5 with two RBIs and one double.
  • Justin Humenay got the start, going three innings giving up only two hits and allowing just one run.
  • Ellis went five innings out of the pen to get his fourth win of the season, striking out two along the way.
  • James Gladden came in and pitched the final inning, giving up just one hit and allowing no earned runs.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Saint Joseph's sprinkled runs across the opening six frames, scoring one run in the third, fourth and sixth while pushing a pair across in the fifth.
  • In the second, the Rams played strong defense behind Humenay. With a runner at second, Ericsson showed off his arm throwing out his 14th runner of the season when St. Joe's Ryan Weingartner challenged the VCU catcher.
  • After six innings the Rams trailed 5-0 and then the bats woke up.
  • Harrison Long led the seventh off with a walk and with one out Mathis joined him with a walk of his own.
  • Benzin knocked in Long on an RBI single to left to get the Rams on the board and with two runners still on Will Carlone followed that up with a single to left to load the bases.
  • Eike recorded the second out with a sacrifice fly to score Mathis to make it 5-2.
  • Jake Thilges kept the merry-go-round going drawing a two-out walk that moved Carlone to second and with Benzin on third the bases were again loaded.
  • At this point energy was injected into the game, with St. Joe's manager being thrown out due to arguing balls and strikes with the home plate umpire.
  • After the delay, Bean wasted zero time taking the first pitch he saw and crushing it to left to clear the bases and put the Rams up 6-5.
  • Ellis answered VCU's six-run top of the seventh by sitting down the Hawks in order, with ground outs to third, short and second to keep it at 6-5.
  • VCU then added to its lead with two runs on three hits in the eighth. Benzin recorded the first RBI with a bunt single to the pitcher that scored Long (single).
  • Eike then brought home Mathis (BB) with a ground-rule double to center that would have scored Benzin as well had it not hopped over the fence.
  • Again, much like the seventh, Ellis slammed the door shut on any thoughts of a Hawks answer, striking out the leadoff hitter before getting the next two to ground out for a 1-2-3 frame.
  • Benzin got his fourth RBI of the game when he singled home Long (HBP) in the ninth to make it 9-5. Carlone then drew a bases-loaded walk, scoring Ericsson (error) and after a wild pitch scored Mathis (BB) the Rams had pushed their lead to 11-5.
  • The Hawks got two in the ninth, but Gladden got the final out on a fly out to right and when Amiss closed his glove the Rams had completed the late-game comeback to get out of Philadelphia, Pa. with a win.
UP NEXT: VCU remains on the road with a midweek visit to William & Mary on Apr. 11 before returning to the Diamond for a weekend A-10 visit by George Mason (Apr. 14-16). Tuesday's game at William & Mary will be broadcast on FloSports. The weekend series will be broadcast on ESPN+.
