The Short Story: Scoring 11 unanswered runs from the third inning to the seventh, VCU Baseball answered a three-run first inning by George Washington to take the second game of its Atlantic 10 weekend matchup in Arlington, Va.

LEADING OFF:
  • The game had to be restarted and picked back up due to weather in the top of the seventh inning and the final three innings were finished on Sunday, Apr. 23.
  • VCU scored two in the third and fourth to take the lead and added three in the sixth and four in the seventh to build its lead.
  • Cooper Benzin had a solid day at the dish, going 3-for-4 with three runs batted in and one stolen base.
  • This was Benzin's fourth-straight multi-hit game.
  • Brandon Eike, Scottie O'Bryan and Ethan Brooks each added two hits in the game.
  • Justin Humenay got the start, going 4.1 innings striking out five and allowing three runs, all in the first inning.
  • Campbell Ellis finished Saturday (Apr. 22) off and was on the mound when the game was stopped. He tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless work to earn the win.
  • Nick Frazier took the bump in the restart and tossed three innings, striking out three and giving up no hits to earn his first career save.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • In the first inning, George Washington got the scoring started. Humenay walked the first two batters he saw and on a 2-1 pitch Eddie Micheletti hit a three-run home run to put GW up 3-0 early.
  • But Humenay would settle in and put up zeros over the three-plus innings allowing just four hits over the stretch.
  • In the top of the third VCU got on the board with a pair of runs and things got started with a pair of walks from Brooks and AJ Mathis.
  • Benzin then smacked a single to the left side to load the bases. With one out, Brandon Eike faced six pitches, drawing a walk to score Brooks and put the Rams on the board.
  • Jake Thilges smacked a sacrifice fly to right to score Mathis and put the score at 3-2.
  • In the fourth the Rams took the lead, and it was started with back-to-back singles by O'Bryan and Ericsson.
  • O'Byran eventually came around to score on a Mathis fielder's choice and after Mathis stole second he was knocked in by Benzin which put the Rams ahead for the first time in the game, 4-3.
  • In the sixth, VCU got RBIs from Brooks and Will Carlone and after Mathis scurried home on a wild pitch the Rams had built a 7-3 lead.
  • The rains came in the seventh, but before the skies opened up the Rams had added to the lead scoring four in the frame. Brooks, Benzin (two) and Eike all had RBIs in the frame, with Eike's RBI double scoring Mathis to push VCU's lead to 11-3.
  • After the game was restarted the next day (Apr. 23) Frazier took the mound and despite loading the bases, only allowed one run and over the next two frames he sat down the Colonials in order to lock up the save and VCU's 11-4 victory.
UP NEXT: After VCU wraps up in Arlington, the Rams return home for a four-game home stand at the Diamond. Old Dominion comes into town on Apr. 25 (6 p.m.) and over the weekend Saint Louis visits Richmond, Va. for an Atlantic 10 series.
