VCU DROPS PITCHER'S DUEL AT GEORGE WASHINGTON

Final Score: George Washington 3, VCU 2
Winning Pitcher: Chris Kahler (3-3)
Losing Pitcher: James Gladden (4-2)
Location: Arlington, Va. (Barcroft Park)
Records: VCU 20-20 (6-6), George Washington 15-26 (6-6)

The Short Story: VCU Baseball and George Washington found themselves in a real pitching duel in the final game of the weekend, and despite a late two-run blast from the bat of Nic Ericsson, the Rams fell just one run short of taking the weekend finale in Arlington.

LEADING OFF:
  • VCU's James Gladden and Brian Curley both pitched outstanding games for VCU, with Gladden allowing just the three runs over innings four through six and Curley keeping GW off the board for a pair.
  • George Washington got nine innings from starter and winner Chris Kahler and it wasn't until the eighth inning did the Rams get runs across the board against Kahler.
  • Gladden got the start and went 6 innings, striking out three and allowing just three runs.
  • Curley came in for the seventh and was shut down for two innings, allowing only one hit and no runs.
  • Ericsson had the big blow in the game, hitting an eighth-inning two-run blast for his lone hit of the game.
  • AJ Mathis, Will Carlone, William Bean joined Ericsson as the hit-getters for the Rams.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Over the first three innings, both Gladden and GW's Kahler traded outs, sitting everyone down in order allowing zero hits between the two.
  • In the fourth, fifth and sixth the Colonials got the runs they would eventually need to take the game. In the fourth Eddie Micheletti hit a solo home run and in the fifth Robby Wacker added a solo home run of his own.
  • During the sixth VCU ended Kahler's no-hit bid when Mathis singled through the right side for VCU's first hit.
  • But in the bottom half of the frame, GW used three singles to push another run across the board and after six innings the Colonials held a 3-0 lead.
  • Things remained the same until the eighth when VCU showed its grit and began to battle back.
  • Bean led things off with a single through the left side and with one out Ericsson stepped to the plate.
  • The hot Ram catcher saw one pitch, a ball, and took the second pitch of the at-bat right to the same spot he did on Friday scoring Bean and getting the Rams within one run.
  • In the ninth Carlone led off with a single to put the tying run on, but some flashy defense from Kahler and GW's first basemen Michael Kohn ended the game and VCU's shot at a comeback and a series win.
UP NEXT: The Rams return home for a four-game home stand at the Diamond. Old Dominion comes into town on Apr. 25 (6 p.m.) and over the weekend Saint Louis visits Richmond, Va. for an Atlantic 10 series. All four games will be broadcast on ESPN+.
