The Short Story:  VCU Baseball used a nine-run first inning, along with six strong innings from starter James Gladden to power past George Mason to take the rubber game of the weekend's Atlantic 10 matchup, giving them three wins in the last four A-10 games.

LEADING OFF:
  • VCU used a grand slam from Scottie O'Bryan and an absolute monster shot from Cooper Benzin to score nine runs in the first.
  • The nine-run first inning tied the most runs scored in an inning by the Rams this season. The Black and Gold also tallied nine runs in the eighth inning at South Florida back on March 24.
  • A.J. Mathis went 2-of-4 from the plate, racking up three runs for the Rams. Overall, Mathis batted 6-of-12 for a .500 average in the three-game series.
  • Benzin batted 2-of-4 with two runs and 3 RBIs, while Brandon Eike also put up a multi-hit game, going 2-of-5 with two runs and two RBIs.
  • Gladden threw six innings as the starter, striking out five Patriots while allowing only two earned runs in the first inning.
  • Maison Martinez, Justin Walton, and Nick Frazier combined to allow only one run in the final three innings to maintain the Rams' lead.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • George Mason got on the board in the top of the first inning thanks to a two-run homer by Connor Dykstra.
  • However, the Patriots' lead was short-lived, as VCU scored early and often in the bottom half of the opening frame. Overall, the Rams had 12 at-bats in the first inning.
  • The rally started with a Mathis double down the left-field line. Benzin then singled and reached second on a throwing error that also allowed Mathis to cross home plate.
  • After Will Carlone got hit by a pitch, Eike doubled to left field, plating Benzin and sending Carlone to third.
  • William Bean then reached base on a fielding error by George Mason's shortstop, setting the stage
  • O'Bryan took the stage and cleared the bases with a grand slam that sailed well over the Diamond's left field fence.
  • Benzin capped VCU's first inning scoring frenzy with a towering two-run home run that traveled 406 feet over left field, making the score 9-2 VCU after the first inning.
  • The Rams padded their lead in the bottom of the fourth when Eike hit a two-out double to left center, bringing home Mathis. Eike scored a few minutes later following a throwing error by the George Mason third basemen.
  • Following four straight scoreless innings, George Mason attempted a rally in the top of the ninth, scoring one run before Frazier came in with the bases loaded and put out all three batters he faced to clinch the series win.
UP NEXT: VCU concludes its four-game homestand on Tuesday, April 18 when they welcome No. 7 Virginia to the Diamond. First pitch is set for 7 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on CW Richmond and ESPN+.
