The Short Story: VCU Baseball fought until the final out, but ultimately fell to No. 8 Virginia in front of a packed house at the Diamond.
LEADING OFF:
- Cooper Benzin stayed hot at the plate, going 4-for-5 at the plate, including a double and batting in a run
- Will Carlone hit his sixth home run of the season, adding two hits and four RBI's and double
- AJ Mathis was 2-for-4 on the night and scored two of VCU's six runs
- Brian Curley pitched a solid last frame, allowing just one hit
- Nic Ericsson hit his second bomb of the season and threw out his 16th runner of the season
- Jack Goleski pitched in relief tossing two innings, allowing just one run
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Cavaliers scored two in the first inning thanks two-run home run by Kyle Teel
- Virginia used a seven-run second frame to take control of the ballgame
- Ericsson got the Rams on the board with a solo shot in the bottom of the third inning
- Carlone doubled on a 3-2 count with one out to score the Rams two more runs in the third
- Virginia tacked on six more runs in the seventh inning
- Curley shut down the Cavaliers lineup in the top of the ninth inning, going 1-2-3, thanks to a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.
- Benzin's double and Carlone's home run added three runs in the ninth as the Rams competed until the final out.
