The Short Story:Â VCU Baseball battled through Saturday's Atlantic 10 matchup with George Mason, but a scoring drought over the final five innings allowed the Patriots to erase an early VCU lead and cost the Rams the second game of the weekend.

LEADING OFF:
- VCU took the lead in the first and retook it in the fourth, but runs in the fifth, sixth and eighth by George Mason pushed the Patriots to the victory.
- A.J. Mathis continued his strong performance this weekend, going 2-of-4 with a double, triple, and 2 RBIs.
- Brandon Eike also went 2-of-4 at the plate with a double and RBI. Eikeis now batting .353 on the season.
- Justin Humenay (starter) and Campbell Ellis pitched four innings each for the Black and Gold, and Nick Frazier came in to pitch a scoreless ninth inning.
HOW IT HAPPENED:Â
- George Mason found the scoreboard first when South Trimbl reached home on a Connor Dykstra ground out in the top of the first.
- The Rams countered with a three-run opening frame. Mathis led off with a double, the first of four two-baggers for the Black and Gold in the inning.
- Will Carlone sent Mathis home with a double of his own, and Eike did the same to bring home Carlone.
- Eike crossed home plate following a single by Jake Thilges to make it a 3-1 game at the end of the first.
- George Mason knotted the game up at 3 with a run each in the second and third innings.
- The Black and Gold grabbed the lead back in the bottom of the fourth when a Mathis triple plated both William Bean and Nic Ericsson, making the score 5-3 VCU after four.
- George Mason took the lead for good with three runs in the top of the fifth, scoring seven unanswered runs on the way to a 10-5 final score.
