Location: Lynchburg, Va. (Worthington Field at Liberty Baseball Stadium)
Records: VCU 3-9, Liberty 7-5
Â
The Short Story: VCU Baseball got three innings of work from starting pitcher
Mason Delane, but the bats were kept quiet by the Liberty Flames pitching to fall in the first of five games this week.
Â
LEADING OFF:Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:Â
- Delane came out of the gate throwing strong, holding the Flames scoreless over the opening two frames. And in the second the Ram starter struck out a pair of Flames, sitting down the Liberty batters in order.
- VCU could not get the bats going throughout the game as the Liberty pitching did a good job of holding the Rams offense at bay.
- Liberty scored three runs in the third and fifth innings and added a run in the fourth and eighth to go along with two in the seventh to add up to the 10 runs scored.
- One bright spot for the Rams came from Dawson's pitching performance. Battling through a leadoff triple in the eighth, Dawson allowed just one run on a passed ball. Following the Liberty run scored, Dawson dug in to strike out one batter and get another to pop up to end the inning.
UP NEXT: The Rams remain on the road with a visit to James Madison. First pitch on Wednesday, Mar. 8 is set for 3 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
