The Short Story: VCU Baseball scored runs in the opening frame and late in the game, but James Madison had too much firepower as the Rams fell in Harrisonburg in the first matchup between the two sides in less than a week.

LEADING OFF:
  • Will Carlone had a strong day at the dish, going 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs.
  • Logan Amiss flashed the leather and the bat, making plays in right (collecting seven putouts) while going 2-for-4 with one run scored and on double.
  • Jesse Robinson Jr. got his first career extra-base hit with a double smacked in the seventh inning.
  • AJ Mathis again did what he has all year, setting the table for the Rams' offense. Today he scored 2-for-3 with a run scored and stole his third base of the season.
  • Both Brian Curley and Maison Martinez made their collegiate debuts.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • VCU scored two runs in the opening frame and it started on Mathis single to left center. He stole second and was knocked in on a double to right field by Carlone.
  • Brandon Eike recorded a sacrifice fly to score William Bean (walk) to wrap up the VCU scoring to open the game.
  • James Madison answered and over the next five innings the Dukes scored 15 runs. They were powered by seven doubles and a lead-off home run to start the bottom half of the first.
  • VCU got back on the board in the sixth and seventh, scoring two in the sixth and one in the seventh.
  • Amiss' double coupled with Aden Hill's first career RBI gave the Rams a pair in the sixth.
  • In the seventh, Robinson Jr. smacked a double and he was brought around by Carlone who replaced him at second with a double to right field.
  • JMU added four runs in the seventh, thanks to a two-run home run and three singles late in the frame. It gave JMU 19 runs and the 19-5 victory.
UP NEXT: VCU returns to The Diamond for the first three games of an upcoming eight-game home stretch when they welcome the Ivy League's Cornell for a weekend series beginning on Friday, Mar. 10.
