The Short Story: Graduate student
Symone Foster ran a time of 13.80 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles, setting the VCU school record in the event. In the throws, sophomore Gudrun Hallgrímsdóttir won the hammer throw convincingly, highlighting a successful opening weekend of the outdoor season for the Ram women.
SPRINTS
- Junior Karah Moore led the Ram contingent in the 200-meter dash, sprinting half of lap in 24.91.
- The 4x100 meter relay team of Foster, freshman Kayelyn Tate, senior Lauryn Freeman, and junior Lauryn Taylor combined for a time of 45.49, placing eighth overall in a competitive field. That time is good for 13th in the NCAA East in the 4x100m relay
HURDLES
- Foster's time of 13.80 in the 100mH breaks the previous VCU school record of 13.84, set last season by Freeman. Furthermore, Foster's time puts her in a tie for 16th in the NCAA East ranking for the event. The top 48 in each event at the end of the season will qualify for the NCAA East Preliminaries to be held May 24-27 in Jacksonville, Fla.
- Senior Syvanna Metcalfe placed ninth in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 1:02.27
JUMPS
- Sophomore Nayome Shipp began her outdoor season with a seventh-place finish in the high jump, clearing the bar at 1.63m (5'-4.25")
- Freshman Selkis Elong set a new personal record in the long jump of 5.86m (19'-2.75")
THROWS
- Hallgrímsdóttir's winning throw of 60.02 meters went a staggering 4.69m further than the runner-up. Hallgrímsdóttir is currently ranked third in the NCAA East for the hammer throw, behind only Shey Taiwo of Ole Miss and Stephanie Ratcliffe of Harvard
- Senior Jocelyn Midkiff placed seventh overall in the discus with a throw of 45.45m (149'-1")
- Redshirt freshman Like Matalatala threw a personal best mark of 13.61m in the shot put, finishing 10th

The VCU track & field team continues its outdoor campaign next Saturday, March 25 when they travel east down I-64 to the Dan Stimpson Invitational in Williamsburg, Va. The first event is set to begin at 10 a.m.
