VOLENDAM, Netherlands – Eredivisie club FC Volendam has announced, on Jan. 24, the signing of VCU Soccer's Philip Klomp to a professional contract.
Klomp is available to be selected as part of FC Volendam's first team and can take the pitch for "Het Nieuwe Oranje" in their next match, a battle against Ajax on Jan. 26.
"Congrats to Flip on the next step in his footballing journey," said VCU head coach Dave Giffard. "To sign in the Eredivisie, one of the top leagues in the world is a dream come true for him. The growth that he has experienced over the last two years has been substantial and it's great to see one of our people achieving their dreams."Â
FC Volendam plays in the Eredivisie, which is the top tier of Dutch Football, having been promoted following the 2022-23 season. Eredivisie is home to a handful of European powerhouse clubs that Klomp will take the pitch against, including UEFA Champions League winners Ajax and PSV Eindhoven and the current leader of Eredivisie Feyenoord.
Klomp, who leaves VCU as a sophomore, played two seasons for the Black and Gold where he started 16 matches and made 35 appearances. Playing in the Rams midfield, Klomp netted three goals and two assists, including a game-winner in 2021 as part of VCU's 4-1 Atlantic 10 victory over Duquesne.
During the 2022 season, Klomp picked up a more important role offensively, recording career highs in goals (two), points (five), shots on goal (five) and over the two season he racked up 1,716 minutes.
