- VCU had the game's first scoring opportunity as Litiana Field's shot on a penalty corner in the sixth minute forced a save from Robin Bleekemolen
- The Rams limited the Hawks to just two shots on goal in the first quarter, both of which were saved by Messier
- Field again forced a save from Bleekemolen in the 24th minute on a penalty corner as the game remained scoreless
- Saint Joseph's scored just before halftime to break the deadlock in the 28th minute on a goal from Ghigliotti
- The Hawks made the lead 2-0 in the 41st minute after a redirected shot off a penalty corner from Santi
