Game 1
FIRST PITCH
  • VCU and George Washington were even with six hits apiece, but the Rams used a four-run fourth inning to pull away.
  • Sophomore left-hander Campbell Ellis (2-4) earned the win on the mound with 4.0 scoreless innings of work, striking out five batters and scattering three hits and a pair of walks.
  • Redshirt junior right-hander Evan Chenier and graduate closer Nolan Wilson combined for 5.0 frames to close the game, allowing one unearned run and striking out five between them.
  • The Rams got their six hits from six different players.
  • Freshman second baseman Marcus O'Malley went 1-for-2 with a double, a walk, and two RBIs.
  • Redshirt sophomores Tyler Locklear and Will Carlone both collected a run and an RBI, while sophomore shortstop Connor Hujsak added an RBI double.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • GW's Logan Leax singled to lead off the top of the second, advancing to third on a stolen base and a wild pitch, but Ellis escaped the jam by striking out the side.
  • VCU opened the scoring with four runs in the bottom of the fourth off a string of four hits. Locklear led off the inning and reached second base on a dropped fly ball in left, then moved to third on a redshirt junior right fielder Logan Amiss single to right. Hujsak bounced an RBI ground-rule double over the left field fence, then Amiss scored when Carlone ran out an RBI infield single. After redshirt junior center fielder AJ Mathis reached on a fielder's choice from a sacrifice bunt attempt, O'Malley dropped a two-run double down the left field line to push the VCU lead to 4-0.
  • An RBI walk scored an unearned run for the Colonials in the top of the fifth, cutting the lead to 4-1. Chenier then got two outs to escape the bases-loaded jam, and recorded 1-2-3 innings in the sixth and seventh.
  • Locklear added an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh, scoring freshman Jesse Robinson, who had pinch run for Jacob Selden after the graduate catcher hit a two-out single to left.

  • The Rams broke open the game with four runs in the sixth. Redshirt sophomore center fielder Scottie O'Bryan led off with a double, then scored on a throwing error on Nippolt's sac bunt attempt. After Locklear was intentionally walked, Carlone blasted a three-run homer to right center to make it 7-2.
