RAMS OPEN SERIES WITH WALK-OFF WIN OVER DAVIDSON, 7-6

Score: VCU 7, Davidson 6
Location: Richmond, Va. (The Diamond)
Records: VCU 16-12 (3-1 Atlantic 10), Davidson 22-6 (3-1 A-10)

The short story: Redshirt sophomore Will Carlone delivered a walk-off pinch-hit single to open a crucial conference series with a win, the Rams' third straight victory in A-10 play.

FIRST PITCH
  • This is VCU's third walk-off win of the season, and second off the bat of Carlone. On March 22, Carlone hit a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth to give VCU a 6-5 win over Longwood. A week earlier on March 15, redshirt sophomore left fielder Cooper Benzin laid down a walk-off bunt single as the Rams defeated No. 12 Liberty 2-1.
  • VCU has won three straight conference games, and 13 of its last 17 contests overall.
  • The Wildcats received votes in both the USA Today Coaches Poll and the NCBWA Division I poll this week, and entered the weekend in first place in the conference standings.
  • Redshirt junior right fielder Logan Amiss went 2-for-3 with a pair of hit-by-pitches and scored two runs, including the game-winner.
  • Redshirt sophomore second baseman Ben Nippolt and sophomore designated hitter Devan Barnett each scored two runs, while graduate catcher Jacob Selden and freshman center fielder Jesse Robinson both collected two RBIs.
  • Left-handers Jaden Griffin and Maddison Furman combined for 3.0 scoreless innings of middle relief, while graduate right-hander Nolan Wilson earned his third win of the season with a scoreless ninth, working around a walk and striking out one.
  • Davidson's Nolan DeVos, who entered the game leading the A-10 in ERA, gave up a season-high four runs and struck out a season-low three batters in 5.0 innings of work. Alex Fenton took the loss for the Wildcats.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Sophomore left-hander Tyler Davis started the game for VCU and struck out the first four batters he faced. After a one-out Davidson single in the second inning, the Rams turned a 4-6-3 double play to keep the Wildcats scoreless.
  • After Amiss was hit by a pitch in the first, redshirt sophomore third baseman Tyler Locklear blasted his ninth home run of the season to left to open the scoring and put VCU on top 2-0.
  • Davidson used a sacrifice fly and a pair of two-run homers in the third inning to take a 5-2 lead.
  • The Rams pulled within a run at 5-4 in the fourth, with Selden and Robinson delivering back-to-back RBI singles after a sacrifice bunt from Benzin had moved Barnett and Nippolt into scoring position.
  • Davidson responded with an RBI double in the top of the fifth to stretch the lead to 6-4.
  • A Benzin sac bunt moved Barnett and Nippolt into scoring position once again in the bottom of the eighth, for Selden to deliver an RBI single up the middle, and for Robinson to leg out an RBI fielder's choice that tied the game at 6-6.
  • Amiss led off the ninth with a single up the middle, then moved to second on Locklear's groundout. Carlone pinch hit for Barnett and lined a single to center, allowing Amiss to hustle around third and score the winning run.

NOTABLE
  • Locklear's home run was the 26th of his career. He has sole possession of seventh place all-time at VCU for career home runs, and sits one back of Juan Serrano (1986-89) in sixth place. Locklear has achieved this in just 98 career games.
  • VCU has now outscored its opponents 28-6 in the first inning this season. The Rams hold a 9-5 record when scoring first, and an 11-6 mark when scoring in the first inning.
  • Nippolt extended his hitting streak to five games, while Locklear and redshirt junior first baseman Michael Haydak have reached base in 11 and eight straight games, respectively.
  • Benzin leads the A-10 with eight sacrifice bunts this season.
  • Selden's 2-for-4 performance was his first multi-hit game as a Ram, while Robinson recorded his first collegiate multi-RBI game.
  • Amiss now has 10 multi-hit games, tied for a team best, while Locklear leads the Rams with eight multi-RBI performances.
