The short story:Â Davidson's Blake Hely carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning as the Wildcats evened a conference series with the Rams.
Â
FIRST PITCH
- Sophomore left-hander Campbell Ellis started on the mound for the Rams, striking out four batters across 4.0 scoreless innings and allowing just one hit.
- Redshirt sophomore third baseman Tyler Locklear went 1-for-3 with a double, a walk, and an RBI.
- Redshirt junior first baseman Michael Haydak went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.
- Hely threw 7.0 innings, striking out eight and allowing two runs on one hit.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Ellis got a pair of strikeouts looking to make quick work of the Wildcats in the first, and got help from a diving stop at second by redshirt sophomore Ben Nippolt to keep it scoreless in the second inning.
- Davidson got a one-out double in the third, but another backwards K from Ellis and a pop-up got VCU out of the inning without further damage.
- A three-run home run opened the scoring for the Wildcats in the fifth, followed by a double steal of second and home to push the advantage to 4-0. An RBI single in the seventh made it 5-0.
- The Rams put together a rally in the bottom of the eighth, sparked by sophomore pinch hitter Devan Barnett reaching base on a ground ball up the middle, followed by a Haydak single to put runners on the corners. Redshirt junior right fielder Logan Amiss grounded out to the pitcher to score redshirt sophomore Scottie O'Bryan, who pinch ran for Barnett.
- Locklear followed up with a double to the gap in left center to score Haydak and cut the lead to 5-2.
- Davidson added insurance runs in the top of the ninth with a two-run double.
