SELDEN'S WALK-OFF HOMER BEATS NO. 8 VIRGINIA IN EXTRA INNINGS

Score: VCU 9, No. 8 Virginia 7 (10 inn.)
Location: Richmond, Va. (The Diamond)
Records: VCU 20-15, No. 8 Virginia 27-10

The short story: Graduate catcher Jacob Selden blasted a walk-off home run in the 10th inning to give VCU its third straight win over the Cavaliers.

FIRST PITCH
  • The victory was VCU's first over a top-10 opponent since beating No. 6 North Carolina on Feb. 27, 2019, and second ranked win on the year (2-1 over No. 12 Liberty on March 15).
  • Tuesday night was also the Rams' fourth walk-off victory of the season.
  • Selden went 2-for-5 with three RBIs and his first home run as a Ram.
  • Graduate right-hander Nolan Wilson earned the win on the mound, throwing the final 3.1 innings (a career-high) of the game without allowing a run or hit, and striking out three. He improved to 4-0 on the year.
  • Sophomore shortstop Connor Hujsak hit his first career grand slam as a part of a big VCU third inning.
  • Redshirt sophomore outfielder Scottie O'Bryan went 2-for-3 with a homer and two runs scored.
  • Redshirt junior right fielder Logan Amiss went 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Virginia opened the scoring in the second inning with a sacrifice fly.
  • VCU loaded the bases in the third with an O'Bryan hit-by-pitch, a single up the middle by redshirt sophomore third baseman Ben Nippolt, and a walk to redshirt sophomore first baseman Tyler Locklear. Amiss then tied the game at 1-1 with a loud single down the left field line.
  • A batter later, Hujsak crushed a towering grand slam over the fence in left to give VCU a 5-1 lead.
  • The Cavaliers pulled a run back in the top of the fourth, but O'Bryan responded in the bottom of the frame with an opposite-field solo shot to right, restoring the four-run advantage at 6-2.
  • After Amiss singled up the middle and stole second in the fifth, and sophomore designated hitter Devan Barnett was intentionally walked, Selden delivered an RBI single to left to push the lead to 7-2.
  • Virginia tied the game at 7-7 with a five-run seventh inning that was capped off by a Devin Ortiz two-run homer.
  • Wilson came out of the bullpen and stopped the damage in the seventh with a swinging strikeout, then posted three more scoreless innings as the game went to extras.
  • In the bottom of the 10th, Barnett walked in front of Selden, who launched a home run over the right field fence to end the game.

NOTABLE
  • Selden (3) and Hujsak (4) both had career highs in RBIs.
  • Hujsak and O'Bryan hit their fourth and second homers of the year, respectively.
  • VCU is 10-4 against teams from the state of Virginia.
  • The Rams have won three straight games, and are 17-7 since March 8.
  • Locklear has reached base in 18 consecutive games, while Nippolt has hits in five straight.
