Â
The short story:Â VCU coupled great pitching with a pair of big innings to win its fourth straight game and open the conference series on the front foot.
Â
FIRST PITCH
- VCU is 18-7 since March 8.
- Redshirt sophomore first baseman Tyler Locklear led the VCU bats, going 3-for-3 with a double, a walk, two runs, and two RBIs.
- Redshirt junior left-hander Maddison Furman moved to 2-0 on the year with the win on the mound, throwing 3.0 scoreless innings, scattering two hits and a walk, and striking out one.
- Redshirt junior right-hander Evan Chenier had his best performance of the season, throwing 3.0 scoreless innings in middle relief.
- Redshirt senior righty Edwin Serrano closed out the game with 2.0 scoreless frames, striking out a pair.
- Redshirt sophomore third baseman Ben Nippolt scored two runs, while redshirt junior right fielder Logan Amiss and sophomore designated hitter Devan Barnett each collected two RBIs.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Rams jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a two-run single from Amiss in the third. After Nippolt drew a two-out walk, and Locklear doubled down the right field line, Amiss hit a line drive to right center to score both runners.
- VCU blew the game open with five runs in the fifth, stringing together four hits and capitalizing on three Hawks throwing errors. After freshman second baseman Marcus O'Malley legged out an infield single, freshman center fielder Jesse Robinson and Nippolt both reached on fielder's choices that didn't record outs to load the bases. Locklear singled through the right side to score two runs, then Nippolt ran home to score on a throwing error from the Saint Joe's pitcher. After sophomore shortstop Connor Hujsak ran out an infield single, then moved to second on a throwing error from the third baseman, pushing Locklear to third, Barnett delivered a two-RBI single through the right side to make it 7-0.
- Chenier followed the big VCU inning with a three-up, three-down frame in the top of the sixth.
- After redshirt junior lefty Jaden Griffin pitched a scoreless seventh, Saint Joseph's got on the board with an unearned run in the top of the eighth. Serrano entered the game with the bases loaded and no outs, and escaped the jam while allowing just one inherited run to score.
Â
NOTABLE
- VCU is 15-6 when scoring first.
- Furman's start was his longest outing of the year without allowing a run.
- Locklear extended his reached base streak to 19 games, and leads the Rams with nine multi-RBI games this season.
