RAMS DROP BACK-AND-FORTH BATTLE AT #22 MARYLAND, 8-6

Score: No. 22 Maryland 8, VCU 6
Location: College Park, Md. (Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium)
Records: VCU 3-8, No. 22 Maryland 10-2

The short story: Six different Rams scored runs in a back-and-forth battle, but the Terrapins claimed the midweek game behind the strength of four home runs.

FIRST PITCH
  • Tuesday's game was VCU's fourth against a ranked opponent this season, and the second straight contest against a Big Ten school.
  • Redshirt sophomore third baseman Tyler Locklear hit his fifth home run of the season, while sophomore shortstop Connor Hujsak hit his first homer of the year.
  • Redshirt junior first baseman Michael Haydak went 2-for-4 with a double, a run, and an RBI.
  • Redshirt junior left-hander Jaden Griffin recorded his second straight scoreless appearance, tossing the eighth inning without allowing a hit.
  • Maryland's Chris Alleyne hit two home runs, while Luke Shliger had a game-high three RBIs.
  • Matt Orlando threw a scoreless sixth to earn the win for the Terps, while redshirt senior right-hander Edwin Serrano was handed the loss. Maryland's Will Glock notched the save.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Maryland jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first with a pair of solo home runs.
  • Haydak stroked a two-out double down the left field line in the third, then scored on redshirt junior left fielder AJ Mathis's RBI single to right.
  • VCU took a 3-2 lead a batter later when Locklear crushed a two-run homer over the wall.
  • The Terps tied the game in the bottom of the third with a solo home run, but Hujsak gave the lead right back to VCU with a leadoff homer to center in the top of the fourth.
  • Sophomore designated hitter Devan Barnett was hit by a pitch in the at-bat immediately following Hujsak's home run, then moved to third after walks by freshman second baseman Marcus O'Malley and redshirt sophomore center fielder Scottie O'Bryan. Haydak's sacrifice fly to left scored Barnett and pushed the VCU lead to 5-3.
  • Maryland tied the game for a second time in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run and an RBI groundout.
  • Redshirt junior right fielder Logan Amiss doubled to left in the fifth, then scored on Barnett's RBI single through the right side to give VCU a 6-5 lead.
  • O'Bryan made a diving catch in the bottom of the fifth to rob the Terps of extra bases and preserve the 1-2-3 inning.
  • VCU left the bases loaded in the sixth after O'Bryan walked, Haydak reached on an error, and Locklear was intentionally walked.
  • Maryland took the lead in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run double, making it 7-6.
  • Serrano struck out the first two batters of the seventh, but a dropped pop fly extended the inning and led to an unearned run to push the Maryland advantage to 8-6.
  • The Rams loaded the bases again in the ninth after Locklear got hit by a pitch, and Hujsak and redshirt sophomore catcher Nic Ericsson both walked, but a ground ball ended the game.

NOTABLE
  • Locklear's home run was the 22nd of his career, tied for 10th-most all-time at VCU.
  • Amiss has six doubles this season, already a career high.
