RAMS SCORE SIX UNANSWERED RUNS TO BEAT N.C. A&T, 9-6

Score: VCU 9, North Carolina A&T 6
Location: Richmond, Va. (The Diamond)
Records: VCU 4-8, North Carolina A&T 6-9

The short story: The Rams scored six unanswered runs and got shutdown performances from the back end of the bullpen to complete the comeback win Friday night.

FIRST PITCH
  • Redshirt junior left-hander Jaden Griffin earned his first win of the year, throwing 2.2 scoreless and hitless innings of relief and striking out five batters.
  • Graduate right-hander Nolan Wilson recorded the six-out save, his first as a Ram, without allowing a run.
  • Redshirt junior infielder Michael Haydak went 1-for-5, but led VCU with two runs and two RBIs.
  • Redshirt junior right fielder Logan Amiss went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
  • Redshirt sophomore left fielder Cooper Benzin went 3-for-4 with a double and a run.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Aggies jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the top of the third, but VCU responded with a trio of runs in the bottom of the frame. After freshman designated hitter Jesse Robinson reached on an error and redshirt sophomore center fielder Scottie O'Bryan doubled down the right field line, Haydak delivered a two-run single to get the Rams on the board.
  • Haydak advanced to second on a wild pitch, then third on a groundout from redshirt sophomore third baseman Tyler Locklear. Amiss lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Haydak from third and cut the lead to 4-3.
  • NC A&T added runs in the fourth and fifth to push its lead to 6-3.
  • Locklear drew a walk in the fifth, advanced to third on Amiss's double to left center, then scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-4.
  • Redshirt sophomore first baseman/catcher Nic Ericsson and graduate catcher Jacob Selden led off the sixth with back-to-back singles. Benzin laid down a bunt single, then an Aggie throwing error allowed Ericsson and Selden to score, tying the game.
  • O'Bryan's RBI groundout two batters later scored Benzin from third, giving VCU the 7-6 lead.
  • Griffin struck out the side in the seventh to keep the momentum with the Rams.
  • After Wilson induced a 1-6 lineout double play to end the top of the eighth, VCU scored a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the frame; sophomore Devan Barnett scored on a wild pitch, and Haydak scored after Locklear reached on an Aggie error.

NOTABLE
  • Griffin's win was his third consecutive scoreless appearance, a span of 5.1 innings without allowing a run. His five strikeouts also tied a career high.
  • Amiss's double was his seventh of the year, the most in the Atlantic 10. The Powhatan, Va., native has reached base safely in every game this season.
  • Robinson started for the first time in his career.
