The short story: The Rams opened a three-game series against Quinnipiac with an 8-2 victory, their fifth straight win.

FIRST PITCH
  • Freshman right-hander Chase Hungate tied career highs with 4.0 innings pitched, and five strikeouts. He earned his third win of the year, the most on the team.
  • Redshirt senior righty Edwin Serrano recorded a six-out save, striking out four batters and allowing just one hit. He's the first Ram to earn multiple saves this season.
  • Redshirt junior first baseman Michael Haydak went 3-for-5 with a double and a pair of runs.
  • Redshirt sophomore third baseman Tyler Locklear and redshirt junior right fielder Logan Amiss each recorded two-hit nights with a double and a run scored each.
  • Freshman second baseman Marcus O'Malley had a productive game at the plate, drawing two walks, hitting a sacrifice fly, and scoring a run.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bobcats got on the board first with a two-run home run, but did not score for the rest of the game.
  • The Rams got a run back in the bottom of the frame. Haydak and Locklear led off with back-to-back hits, then redshirt sophomore catcher Nic Ericsson scored Haydak from third with an RBI groundout.
  • VCU tied the game in the fourth as redshirt sophomore designated hitter Will Carlone led off with a double down the left field line, moved to third on redshirt sophomore left fielder Cooper Benzin's sacrifice bunt, and scored on O'Malley's sac fly.
  • The Rams took the lead an inning later. Amiss sent a two-out single up the middle, stole second, and scored on sophomore shortstop Connor Hujsak's opposite-field single to make it 3-2.
  • Haydak doubled the VCU lead to 4-2 in the seventh, leading off the frame with a double down the left field line, moving to third on Locklear's groundout, and scoring on a wild pitch.
  • VCU blew open the game with a four-run eighth inning. After Benzin singled, O'Malley walked, and both runners executed a double steal, redshirt sophomore center fielder Scottie O'Bryan sent a two-run single up the middle to make it 6-2.
  • O'Bryan stole second and moved to third on Haydak's flyout, then Locklear scored him with an RBI single to center. Locklear advanced to third on an Amiss double, then scored on a Quinnipiac throwing error.
