FIRST PITCH

- Sophomore lefty Campbell Ellis threw 4.1 innings to start the game (the most of his career, and the most in a single outing by a VCU pitcher this season) and struck out a career-high six batters. He retired the first 12 batters he faced in order in a perfect four-inning stretch.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Haydak led off the bottom of the first with a double down the right field line, then opened the scoring on Hujsak's double to the gap in left center.
- O'Bryan led off the bottom of the third with VCU's third double of the day, moved to third on a failed pickoff attempt, and scored on Haydak's RBI groundout to double the VCU lead to 2-0.
- Quinnipiac took a 3-2 lead with three runs in the top of the fifth on three hits, a hit-by-pitch, and a VCU error.
- VCU batted around in the sixth, scoring seven runs to take control of the game. Haydak and redshirt junior right fielder Logan Amiss both singled before a Hujsak walk to load the bases for Carlone, who shot a two-run single through the right side to give VCU the lead back at 4-3.
- After a walk to graduate catcher Jacob Selden, a dropped fly ball in right field off the bat of redshirt sophomore left fielder Cooper Benzin plated two more VCU runs, pushing the lead to 6-3.
- O'Bryan put the exclamation mark on the inning, driving a three-run home run over the fence in left to make it 9-3.
- The Bobcats got a run back in the top of the seventh, but Hujsak homered to left in the bottom of the frame to restore VCU's six-run lead at 10-4.
- The Rams tacked on four insurance runs in the eighth with a two-run single by freshman catcher Casey Gibbs, an Amiss sacrifice fly, and an RBI single from sophomore Devan Barnett.
- Redshirt junior lefty Maddison Furman closed out the game for VCU with 1.1 scoreless innings and a pair of strikeouts.
