Game 1:Â VCU 4, Monmouth 2
Game 2:Â VCU 3, Monmouth 0
Location:Â Richmond, Va. (The Diamond)
Records:Â VCU 6-8, Monmouth 7-7
Â
The short story:Â Stellar outings from several VCU pitchers and a pair of home runs led the Rams to a doubleheader sweep of Monmouth, completing a three-win weekend.
Â
GAME ONE
FIRST PITCH:
- Sophomore left-hander Tyler Davis started the game with four scoreless innings, striking out five batters and scattering a hit and a walk on 67 pitches.
- Freshman right-hander Chase Hungate earned his second win of the season, striking out five across 3.2 innings.
- Redshirt senior Edwin Serrano notched his first save of the season, retiring all four batters he faced to close the game, including a pair of swinging strikeouts.
- Redshirt sophomore third baseman Tyler Locklear went 2-for-4 with a double and a run.
- Redshirt sophomore center fielder Scottie O'Bryan went 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- VCU opened the scoring in the fourth with back-to-back doubles from Locklear and redshirt junior right fielder Logan Amiss.
- Monmouth tied the game in the top of the seventh with a sacrifice fly, but the Rams immediately responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame.
- After singles from redshirt sophomore left fielder Cooper Benzin and freshman second baseman Marcus O'Malley put runners at the corners, O'Bryan reached on a Monmouth throwing error, a play that would have scored Benzin from third regardless, to regain the lead.
- O'Malley and O'Bryan pushed the lead to 4-1 by scoring on a passed ball and wild pitch, respectively.
- An RBI double from James Harmstead got a run back for Monmouth in the eighth, but Serrano retired the rest of the Hawks in order.
Â
GAME TWO
FIRST PITCH:
- Sophomore Campbell Ellis, redshirt juniors Evan Chenier and Maddison Furman, and redshirt sophomore Jack Masloff combined to strike out 10 batters across nine scoreless innings, allowing just four hits.
- Furman earned his first win of the year, picking up three strikeouts in 2.1 innings.
- Masloff needed just 11 pitches to earn a four-out save, the first of his career.
- Locklear went 2-for-4 with a double and his sixth home run of the year.
- Redshirt sophomore catcher Nic Ericsson blasted his first homer of the season.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After redshirt junior first baseman Michael Haydak hit an infield single, Locklear crushed a ball over the left field fence to give VCU a 2-0 lead in the third.
- An inning later, Ericsson led off with a no-doubter down the left field line to push the Rams lead to 3-0.
- The Hawks did not record a hit after a lead-off double in the sixth.
Â
NOTABLE
- The 3-0 win was VCU's first shutout win since a 9-0 victory over Wagner on March 1, 2020.
- Locklear's home run was the 23rd of his career, tied for eighth all-time at VCU.
- Amiss has reached base safely in every game this season.
