BASEBALL DROPS 10-4 DECISION AT #3 OLE MISS

Score: No. 3 Ole Miss 10, VCU 4
Location: Oxford, Miss. (Swayze Field)
Records: VCU 2-3, No. 3 Ole Miss 5-0

The short story: Ole Miss capitalized on VCU walks and errors to hand the Rams a 10-4 loss in the opening contest of a three-game series.

FIRST PITCH
  • Redshirt junior right fielder Logan Amiss, the Atlantic 10 leader in runs and doubles, went 2-for-4 with his fifth double of the season.
  • Redshirt sophomore third baseman Tyler Locklear went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
  • The Rams and Rebels were even with eight hits apiece, but VCU committed five errors compared to Ole Miss's two.
  • Freshman right-hander Chase Hungate threw three innings of relief without allowing an earned run.
  • Derek Diamond earned the win on the mound for Ole Miss, while Peyton Chatagnier and Reagan Burford led the Rebels offense with 3 RBIs each.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • With two outs in the first inning, Locklear reached base on a hard-hit ball to third base that was ruled an error, then scored on redshirt junior Michael Haydak's RBI double down the left field line.
  • Redshirt sophomore lefty Jack Masloff worked around two errors in the first, striking out Jacob Gonzalez looking to get out of the inning without allowing a run.
  • The Rebels drew a pair of walks to open the bottom of the second, which sparked a three-run inning.
  • Graduate catcher Jacob Selden and sophomore shortstop Connor Hujsak hit back-to-back two-out singles in the fourth, then Selden came home to score on an error on freshman second baseman Marcus O'Malley's ground ball, cutting the lead to 3-2.
  • The Rebels scored seven straight runs, including three unearned, from the fourth through sixth innings.
  • Redshirt sophomore infielder Ben Nippolt drew a walk in the ninth, advanced to second on an Amiss single, and scored when redshirt sophomore center fielder Scottie O'Bryan reached on an error.
  • Locklear, the next batter, delivered a single through the left side to score Amiss and cut the lead to 10-4.
