VCU CLOSES WEEKEND WITH 14-3 LOSS AT #3 OLE MISS

Score: No. 3 Ole Miss 14, VCU 3 (7 inn.)
Location: Oxford, Miss. (Swayze Field)
Records: VCU 2-4, No. 3 Ole Miss 6-0

The short story: The Rams scored three quick runs to open the game, but the Rebels outhit VCU by a 14-2 margin and scored 14 unanswered runs to close out the weekend series.

FIRST PITCH
  • Redshirt junior first baseman Michael Haydak went 1-for-3 with a double, a run, and an RBI.
  • Freshman catcher Casey Gibbs recorded his first collegiate hit, singling through the right side in the sixth.
  • Freshman right-hander Cade Dressler continued the hot start to his college career, throwing 1.1 scoreless innings.
  • Redshirt junior lefty Jaden Griffin struck out four batters in 1.2 innings, his most strikeouts in a single game since he punched out five against Sacred Heart on Feb. 23, 2020.
  • This was the second game of the series after Saturday's contest was canceled due to inclement weather.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Redshirt junior right fielder Logan Amiss led the game off with a nine-pitch walk, and moved to third when redshirt sophomore third baseman Tyler Locklear reached on an error. Amiss scored on Haydak's ground ball to third, on which Haydak reached safely after another Rebel error.
  • Locklear then sprinted down the third base line to score on a wild pitch, pushing the VCU advantage to 2-0. With Haydak at third following the wild pitch, graduate catcher Jacob Selden delivered an RBI groundout to first with the infield in to make it 3-0.
  • Ole Miss got on the board in the bottom of the first with a walk and two singles, then took the lead in the second with a three-run inning.
  • The Rebels pulled away with eight runs over the next three frames, punctuated by a three-run homer from Tim Elko in the fifth.
  • Tywone Malone hit a two-run home run in the seventh to end the game on an agreed-upon run rule.
