RAMS LOSE HEARTBREAKER TO JMU, 62-60

The Short Story: VCU and JMU battled back-and-forth in a game with 12 lead changes and 11 ties. VCU had an opportunity to tie the game with 2.7 seconds left at the free throw line but missed both attempts.

OPENING TIP: 
  • Junior guard Sarah Te-Biasu led the way for the Rams with 16 points and seven rebounds
  • Redshirt senior guard Janika Griffith-Wallace also was in double figures with 11 points, including a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line, and contributed seven rebounds
  • Redshirt junior forward Jennifer Ezeh added 10 points, tying a career-high she set in the last game against Wisconsin
  • JMU's Kiki Jefferson filled up the box score with 17 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists, shooting 6-of-14 from the field, including the game-winning free throws
  • Kadidia Toure and Caroline Germond scored 9 and 8 points respectively for the Dukes
  • VCU outscored JMU 10-1 on fast break points 
  • JMU went 8-of-24 from beyond the arc compared to VCU's 5-of-20
  • Kiki Jefferson scored a game-high 17 points for the Dukes along with six assists
     
HOW IT HAPPENED: 
  • After a back-and-forth opening period, the Black and Gold went on a 6-0 run spanning 4:11 early in the second period to get out to a 24-13 lead
  • The Rams and Dukes traded baskets for the rest of the first half as VCU took a 33-26 lead into halftime
  • JMU came out of halftime going on a 9-0 run that covered the first 2:22 of the third period to take a 35-33 lead
  • The game was a seesaw battle the rest of the way, with neither team getting a lead greater than JMU's five-point cushion with 3:47 to play in the fourth quarter
  • Te-Biasu would tie the game at 60-60, scoring a jumper in the paint with 1:14 to play
  • Two JMU possessions later, Jefferson would drive to the basket and draw a foul to get to the line and sink the game-winning free throws with 21 seconds left. JMU led 62-60
  • VCU had a chance to tie the game following a shooting foul but the Rams missed two free throws with 2.7 seconds left
