QUICK FACTS
  • The Rams hadn't lost a game since Aug. 21, a 2-1 setback at then-No. 23 N.C. State
  • VCU was only outshot by Saint Louis 4-3 in shots on goal with the Billikens having a 13-7 edge in overall shots
  • Senior goalkeeper Whitney Horton made three saves
  • Kanna Matsuhisa and Ella Higgins led VCU with two shot attempts each

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Saint Louis had the game's first chance in the 8th minute but VCU's defense forced a shot from the edge of the six-yard box and Anna Bagley was in position to block the shot at the post
  • In the 37th minute, Aisha Maughan had a shot attempt from 30 yards out that was saved by the Saint Louis keeper
  • Two minutes later, both Matsuhisa and Natalia Santangelo had shot attempts saved by the Billikens' goalkeeper and the teams were tied 0-0 at the half
  • VCU's best chance of the game came in the 61st minute as Higgins got to the center of the box for a good look at goal but her shot attempt went wide right
  • Saint Louis took a 1-0 lead in the 66th minute as Caroline Kelly collided with Horton on a lofted pass into the box, no foul was called and the ball fell to Kelly's feet for the goal
  • The Rams only allowed one shot on goal the entire second half, Kelly's goal, but were unable to score the equalizer
