SHORTHANDED RAMS FALL TO NO. 20 ODU

Final Score: No. 20 ODU 3, VCU 0
Location: Richmond, Va. (Cary Street Field)
Records:  VCU 2-2, ODU 4-1

The Short Story:  Sasha Elliott made six saves in goal but No. 20 ODU pulled away from a shorthanded VCU team in the second half.

QUICK FACTS:
  • Janne Wetzel had a team-high five shot attempts including four on goal
  • ODU outshot VCU 16-7 overall and 10-5 in shots on goal. ODU only outshot VCU 9-7 in the second half of the contest
  • The Rams held a 7-6 edge in penalty corners
  • Carolina Mujica-Robles recorded a defensive save in the contest
  • ODU had three players score one goal each in the contest as Marlon De Bruijne, Alix Marien and Illse Westera all scored
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • ODU had a majority of the possession early in what was a defensive battle. The Rams did not record a shot attempt in the first half while the Monarchs recorded just three shots on goal. The teams were tied at 0-0 at halftime
  • The Monarchs opened the scoring just after halftime as Westera scored to put ODU up 1-0 after a pass was deflected and fell to her at the back post
  • The Rams came close to tying the game in the 34th minute but Wetzel had two shot attempts off penalty corners saved. Bridget McCormick then hit the crossbar on a shot attempt less than a minute later
  • ODU doubled their lead in the 49th minute after Marien was played in behind the VCU defense
  • VCU had a chance to cut into the deficit but had three consecutive Wetzel penalty corner shots saved and blocked by ODU's defense
  • The Monarchs scored the game's final goal in the 58th minute as De Bruijne scored
