The Short Story: After taking an early 1-0 lead less than two minutes into the game, American tied the game in the fifth minute and the teams remained deadlocked into overtime. The Eagles got an early penalty corner in the first overtime period and scored to hand VCU the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

• VCU opened the scoring in the second minute after Lonica McKinney forced a turnover near midfield and scored on a breakaway, her shot beating the goalkeeper to the far post
• American tied the game at 1-1 in the fifth minute as Dellamaggiore collected the ball at the top of the arc and fired a shot underneath Sasha Elliott for the goal
• The Eagles had five shots on goal in the second quarter but Elliott turned all five shot attempts away and the teams went into halftime tied 1-1
• Neither team found much offense in the third quarter with only three total shot attempts combined
• VCU defended in its own half for much of the fourth quarter but kept the Eagles from scoring and forced overtime still tied 1-1
• American scored the game-winning goal follow a penalty corner insert as Coenen Noor fed Charllene Boshoff who scored from the near post
