NEW YORK – VCU sophomore pitcherÂ
Danny Watson was selected by the New York Yankees in the 15th round of the 2021 MLB Draft with the 453rd overall pick Tuesday afternoon.
Â
Watson is the 53rd player to be drafted out of VCU in the school's history, and the second Rams pitcher selected this year afterÂ
Bradford Webb went to the Texas Rangers in the seventh round yesterday.
Â
Watson, a powerful 6-foot-7 righty, turned in an impressive three-year career on the mound for the Rams. In 40 career appearances, including seven starts, he compiled an 8-5 record and three saves. In 88.0 innings of work, Watson struck out 92 batters and posted a sparkling 3.38 ERA.
Â
The Nassau, N.Y., native helped VCU win the 2021 Atlantic 10 Championship and play in the NCAA Starkville Regional, collecting 55 strikeouts across 44.1 innings this year.Â
Â
In 2019, Watson was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team after posting a 2.15 ERA and a 5-1 record in 15 appearances. In 29.1 innings, he struck out 22 batters and notched two saves.
Â
The Rams finished the year at 38-16, the program's seventh consecutive full season of 34 or more wins, in addition to the A-10 regular season and tournament titles.
