RICHMOND, Va. – VCU Baseball Head Coach
Sean Thompson has agreed to a three-year contract extension, Vice President and Director of Athletics
Ed McLaughlin announced Monday.
Â
The extension adds three seasons to Thompson's existing contract and runs through the 2031 season.
Â
"Sean had a vision for this program from day one and we took the first step toward that vision this year in securing our fifth Atlantic 10 Tournament championship" McLaughlin said. "He has earned everything he has gotten in life and continued our tradition of national success in baseball by developing young men into the best versions of themselves in all ways of life. Sean's coaching mindset, his incredible character and his devotion to VCU make him the perfect person to lead our baseball program throughout our next chapter."
Â
Thompson's new deal follows a 38-win season which featured an Atlantic 10 Championship, NCAA Tournament victory and three MLB Draft selections in his second year at the helm of the program.
Â
The 2026 season under Thompson's leadership not only marked a historic turnaround, but saw program history throughout the season and into the postseason run. VCU's NCAA Tournament victory over No. 25 Tennessee was the third most-watched regional round game on record, while the Rams' win over No. 9 Virginia was the program's seventh top-10 win. The Black & Gold set a new program mark in home runs (68) and soared into the top six in VCU history in eight other statistics, ranking in the nation's top 25 in three of them.
Â
In addition to team accolades, Thompson's 2026 squad was highly decorated individually, as
Jacob Lee earned All-Region First Team honors,
Patrick Steitz was named a National Pitcher of the Year Semifinalist, and multiple Rams picked up Atlantic 10 All-Conference honors, A10 All-Championship recognition and NCAA Regional All-Tournament Team selections.
Â
"I'm very thankful to be a part of this great university and work with our amazing student-athletes. VCU is my home and I want to thank
Ed McLaughlin and Dr. Rao for their constant support of our program," Thompson said. "I am excited to continue to lead the future and the opportunity to bring more championships back to VCU. Go Rams!"
Â
Thompson was elevated to head coach in July 2024 as the then-youngest head coach in Division I baseball and enters his third year leading the program in 2026-27. A member of the Rams' 2015 Regional Champion squad and a 2018 alumnus of the VCU Baseball program, Thompson is recognized as one of the most accomplished pitchers in program history.
Â
Thompson has served on the Rams' coaching staff for four seasons in two separate stints. Prior to his return to VCU ahead of the 2024 season, Thompson was an assistant coach at FIU (2023) and pitching coach at Monmouth (2022).
Â
The Indiana, Pa., native graduated from VCU with a bachelor's degree in Business Communications in 2018 and played professionally in the Chicago White Sox organization before returning to his alma mater as a coach.
