VCU SWEEPS SERIES WITH RICHMOND, WINS IN SHOOTOUT

Final Score: VCU 2, Richmond 1
Location: Richmond, Va. (Crenshaw Field)
Records: VCU 6-0 (5-0 A-10), Richmond 2-2 (2-2 A-10)

The Short Story: VCU's defense didn't allow a shot after halftime but the Rams needed the penalty shootout to beat crosstown rival Richmond and sweep the season series.

QUICK FACTS:
  • Janne Wetzel scored a goal off a penalty corner
  • Maite Sturm and Svea Sturm each had an assist on Wetzel's goal
  • Litiana Field had a team-high five shots with two shots on goal
  • VCU outshot Richmond 13-4 overall and 7-3 in shots on goal
  • The Rams also held a 6-2 advantage in penalty corners
  • Steffie Bongers scored the Spiders' lone goal

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Richmond opened the scoring off a penalty corner in just the second minute with Bongers scoring the goal
  • VCU answered and tied the game at 1-1 just over a minute later as Wetzel scored off the insert from Maite Sturm and Svea Sturm with the stick stop
  • The game became a defensive battle as Richmond outshot VCU 3-0 in the second quarter, but the teams went into halftime tied 1-1
  • The Rams didn't allow a shot from Richmond for the entire second half or either overtime period, outshooting the Spiders 11-0 during that time but couldn't break the deadlock
  • The teams went to a penalty shootout with Sasha Elliott stopping all but one of the Spiders' attempts as VCU won the shootout portion, 3-1
