The Short Story: Four VCU throwers traveled to Gainesville, Florida to compete in the Tom Jones Memorial Meet at the University of Florida where junior Kayla Merkel broke her own school record in the javelin throw for the second time this season on Friday night. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED: 
 

• Merkel unleashed a 48.55m throw in the javelin. The throw tops Merkel's previous mark of 47.11 that she set at the South Florida Invitational earlier this season.
• Senior Makayla McGowan hit a personal record in the hammer throw with a throw that reached 51.37m. She recorded a 14.73m throw in the shot put, and a 44.31m throw in the discus. 
• Sophomore Jocelyn Midkiff threw the discus a personal best 47.78m. Midkiff also hit a mark of 13.80m. 
• Freshman Eryn Byrd hit a mark of 12.70 in the shot put, and 42.13 in the hammer throw.
