GAME ONE
First Pitch
- Senior first baseman Steven Carpenter recorded two of VCU's nine hits in the ballgame, including his second home run of the year. He drove in a pair of Rams and reached base four times
- Junior left fielder Jack Schroeder smacked his sixth homer of the year for the Black and Gold
- Starter Danny Watson was brilliant, spinning four innings of one-hit ball for VCU. He struck out six and did not allow a run
The Difference
- VCU mounted two separate dramatic four-run rallies in the game, first in the sixth and again in the eighth
- Hibbits delivered VCU the victory when he sent a ground ball to second with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth and beat a throw to first to break up a potential inning-ending double play. Sophomore second-baseman Michael Haydak scored from third on the play, which kicked off an emotional VCU celebration that carried into right field
- VCU trailed 8-5 heading into the eighth, but pinch hitter Andrew Puglielli led off with a single up the middle, and two batters later, junior centerfielder Hogan Brown roped a base hit to right to score junior catcher Hunter Vay, who began the inning at second base. Haydak singled two pitches later to load the bases, and freshman third baseman Tyler Locklear drew a four-pitch walk to pull VCU within 8-7. The Rams tied it on a Carpenter bouncer Davidson was unable to handle on the next play
- The Rams trailed 5-1 entering the sixth, but Carpenter homered to center with one out. VCU later loaded the bases for Hujsak, who lined a double into the right centerfield gap to clear the bags and tie the score at 5-5
GAME TWO
First Pitch
- Furman earned his first win of the season with four scoreless innings of two-hit ball. The lefty struck out two and did not walk a batter. Sophomore Evan Chenier worked the final three innings to pick up his fourth save of the year.
- Senior left fielder Brandon Henson recorded a 2-for-2 day at the plate and supplied a pair of RBIs for VCU
- VCU senior catcher Josh Simon provided a pair of RBIs on a sacrifice fly and a bases loaded walk
The Difference
- VCU pitching did not walk a batter and allowed just five hits
- HIbbits kicked off a three-run VCU first inning with an RBI single. Henson drew a bases loaded walk a short time later, and Simon pushed another across when Schroeder tagged up from third on his fly ball to moderately deep left
- Henson helped VCU extend its lead to 5-0 with an RBI double in the fifth
