Â
The short story: Freshman third baseman
Tyler Locklear delivered a go-ahead single in the seventh, and VCU pitching, led by freshman starter
Mason Delane, held Davidson to five hits as the Rams completed a four-game sweep Sunday.
Â
FIRST PITCH
- Although he did not factor in the decision, Delane turned in his best performance of the season. The right-hander limited the Wildcats to three hits. He struck out six and did not walk a batter in five innings, his longest outing of the year
- Locklear finished his day 2-for-4
- Junior centerfielder Hogan Brown reached base four times and was officially 2-for-2 at the plate. He also drove in a run and scored once
- Sophomore second baseman Michael Haydak reached base for the 18th straight game and supplied an RBI single for VCUÂ
THE DIFFERENCE
- VCU trailed 1-0, but a Hogan single on a diving liner to left field put Rams at the corners with two outs in the seventh. Haydak served a single into right field to tie the game, and Locklear followed with a scorched line drive between second and third to give VCU a 2-1 advantage
- Delane held Davidson to one hit through four and allowed just a solo homer by Ryan Wilson leading off the fifth before departing
- The VCU bullpen tossed four scoreless innings. Freshman Campbell Ellis earned his first save with two hitless innings
- VCU pitching issued just two walks Sunday
NOTABLE
- VCU has won a season-high five straight games
- The Rams improved to 11-3 at The Diamond this season
