SIXTH-INNING RALLY LIFTS VCU PAST WILLIAM & MARY

Score: VCU 8, William & Mary 3
Location: Williamsburg, Va. (Plumeri Park)
Records: VCU 17-14, William & Mary 6-18

The short story: Junior catcher Jack Schroeder hit a two-run, go-ahead double in a four-run sixth inning, and VCU pitching combined to scatter six hits on the way to a non-conference win at William & Mary Tuesday.

FIRST PITCH
  • Sophomore second baseman Michael Haydak doubled twice and finished 2-for-4 with an RBI, a stolen base and a pair of runs scored for the Rams
  • Schroeder finished his day 1-for-2
  • Starter Mason Delane allowed two hits and one earned run in his 10th start of the year for the Black and Gold. He struck out three and walked one
  • A pair of freshman lefties, Jack Masloff and Tyler Davis, combined to fire three hitless innings to close the game for VCU. Masloff struck out four in two innings of work
THE DIFFERENCE
  • Schroeder came off the bench in the sixth inning with the bases loaded and one out in a 2-2 game and promptly stroked an opposite-field double to push VCU to a 4-2 lead. Freshman shortstop Connor Hujsak squeezed home another run, and Schroeder eventually scored on a passed ball as the Rams widened their advantage to 6-2
  • A Tribe error helped VCU add a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh
  • Haydak ripped his ninth double of the year in the third to bring home freshman left fielder Devan Barnett and tie the game at 1-1
  • William & Mary answered with a run in the fourth, but freshman third baseman Tyler Locklear provided the equalizer in the form of an RBI single in the top of the fifth that scored Haydak
NOTABLE
  • Haydak has reached base in 14 straight games and leads VCU with 10 multi-hit games this season
  •  Locklear leads the Atlantic 10 Conference with 36 RBIs
  • VCU improved to 4-0 against William & Mary in 2021
NEXT UP
VCU will return to The Diamond for a four-game set with A-10 rival Davidson April 16-18. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. The Rams and Wildcats will play a doubleheader Saturday and the series finale on Sunday.
