COLONIALS SQUEAK PAST RAMS IN SERIES FINALE

Score: George Washington 5, VCU 4
Location: Arlington, Va. (Barcroft Park)
Records: VCU 16-14 (1-3 A-10), George Washington 12-9 (3-1)

The short story: Junior centerfielder Hogan Brown and junior catcher Hunter Vay recorded two hits apiece, and VCU's bullpen supplied five scoreless innings, but the Rams dropped a one-run decision Sunday at George Washington.

FIRST PITCH
  • Vay and Brown each turned in a 2-for-4 effort on the day. Vay scored a pair of runs
  • Freshman third baseman Tyler Locklear doubled for the seventh time this season and reached base four times on the day for the Rams
  • Freshmen left-handers Andrew Ward and Campbell Ellis combined to scatter five hits over the final five innings for the Black and Gold. Neither walked a batter and Ward struck out two in 1.2 innings
THE DIFFERENCE
  • The Colonials erased a 3-1 VCU lead with two runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth. Domenic Boselli ripped his second homer of the year in the fifth, a two-run shot down the left field line, to push GW in front 5-3
  • VCU threatened in the sixth. Vay led off with a double to right center, and senior second baseman Andrew Puglielli followed with a single to put runners on the corners with nobody out. Vay scored a short time later on an RBI fielder's choice by senior first baseman Steven Carpenter, but the Rams could get no closer
  • Locklear stroked a double in the first and came around to score on a groundout by junior DH Liam Hibbits to provide VCU with a 1-0 lead. Brown singled home Vay in the second to stretch the margin to 2-0
  • George Washington's Trevor Kunci held the Rams hitless the final 3.2 innings to earn his third save
