The short story: Freshman third baseman Tyler Locklear and sophomore second baseman Michael Haydak each collected three hits on the day, but VCU dropped a pair of one-run games in a doubleheader Saturday at George Washington.

GAME ONE
First Pitch
  • Senior left fielder Brandon Henson smacked his second home run of the year for the Rams and finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs
  • Haydak notched his 12th multi-hit game of the year for VCU with a 2-for-4 day at the plate
  • Sophomore lefty Jaden Griffin threw 2.2 innings of hitless relief for VCU
The Difference
  • VCU nearly completed a thrilling comeback. The Rams plated three runs in the seventh, but GW starter Harrison Cohen narrowly escaped for the complete game win
  • Junior right fielder Jack Schroeder led off the seventh with a walk, and two batters later, Henson launched a 2-2 pitch over the left field fence to pull VCU within 5-3. Later, the Rams legged out three straight singles, including an RBI bouncer through the left side by Locklear, to trim the deficit to 5-4. Senior first baseman Steven Carpenter battled through a 13-pitch at-bat to keep VCU's hope alive, but Cohen did not waver
  • The Rams fell behind 4-1 after the Colonials plated one in the first and three in the second. Schroeder briefly tied the game at 1-1 with his fourth home run of the year
GAME TWO
First Pitch
  • Junior designated hitter Liam Hibbits drove in both VCU runs and finished 1-for-3
  • Locklear single and doubled in four at-bats, while senior centerfielder Hogan Brown doubled and reached base twice for the Black and Gold
  • Sophomore left-hander Maddison Furman threw four scoreless innings in his second start of the season for VCU. He held George Washington to three hits and a walk. He fanned three batters
The Difference
  • The Colonials rallied for two runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 2-2, then walked off with the win on a leadoff home run by Eddie Micheletti in the seventh
  • Hibbits staked the Rams to a 2-0 lead with a two-run double in the top of the first inning
