VCU SWEEPS SATURDAY DOUBLEHEADER FROM WILLIAM & MARY

The short story: Senior first baseman Steven Carpenter and junior designated hitter Liam Hibbits drove in four runs apiece on the day and VCU received strong work out of its bullpen on the way to a doubleheader sweep of William & Mary Saturday at The Diamond.
 
GAME ONE RECAP
FIRST PITCH
  • VCU freshman third baseman Tyler Locklear homered for the second straight day, a solo blast to deep left in the eighth. It was his 12th home run of the season
  • Carpenter finished game one 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs
  • Freshman shortstop Connor Hujsak also drove in a pair for the Black and Gold, while Hibbits reached bas three times
  • Freshman lefthander Campbell Ellis earned the win for the Rams with 2.1 innings of four-hit relief, while sophomore Danny Watson twirled 2.2 innings of scoreless ball to pick up his first save of the year. He struck out five
THE DIFFERENCE
  • Senior catcher Josh Simon kicked off a three-run rally in the fifth for VCU with a go-ahead sacrifice fly that broke a 2-2 tie. Hujsak followed by lacing a two-run double down the left field line to push the VCU lead to 5-2
  • VCU trailed 2-0, but Carpenter tied the game in the bottom of the third with a bloop single to right that plated a par of Rams
  • The Rams' bullpen allowed just one run and five hits in five innings of work
GAME TWO RECAP
FIRST PITCH
  • Sophomore second baseman Michael Haydak led VCU with three hits (3-for-4). He reached base four times and scored four runs
  • Hibbits went 2-for-5 and drove in four for the Black and Gold. He was one of four Rams to record multiple hits
  • Locklear singled twice and reached base four times. He came around to score three runs
  • Hard-throwing freshman lefthander Andrew Ward tossed three innings of scoreless, one-hit ball out of the bullpen to record his first win. He struck out five Tribe hitters
THE DIFFERENCE
  • The top of VCU's order, Haydak, Locklear, Carpenter and Hibbits, hit a combined 9-for-16 with six RBIs and eight runs scored
  • VCU pitching struck out 14 in the nightcap
  • For the second straight game, VCU overcame an early 2-0 deficit. Junior leftfielder Jack Schroeder stroked a go-ahead two-run single in the third to give VCU the lead for good
  • Hibbits drove in four runs in the game on a two-run single in the seventh and a two-RBI double in the eighth
NOTABLE
  • The second game of the day was interrupted by a nearly two-hour rain delay in the bottom of the third
  • VCU has won three straight games
