THE SHORT STORY
Behind a pair of second-half goals from redshirt junior
Emma Kershner, VCU Women's Soccer defeated Davidson 2-0 Tuesday night at Sports Backers Stadium.
QUICK FACTS
- The goals mark the second and third of the season for Kershner
- Redshirt junior Lyndsey Gutzmer recorded her first assist of the season
- Sophomore Anna Bagley also tallied an assist, her second of the year
- In her first start this season, junior goalkeeper Grace Young recorded a save in her only opportunity
- VCU totaled seven shots in the match, placing four on goal
HOW IT HAPPENED
- To open the match, Davidson was content to play defense and search for opportunities to counter. VCU held possession for 66% of the first half, but struggled to find scoring chances
- In the 58th minute, Gutzmer split a pair of Davidson defenders along the right side of the box and centered the ball to Kershner who placed it in the top-left corner of the net
- Following the goal, Davidson adjusted its attack and began pushing the ball down the field, putting pressure on the Rams' backline.
- In the 73rd minute, Bagley turned a corner on the Wildcats defense. The sophomore raced alongside the end line and found a cutting Kershner who struck the ball past the outstretched arms of Davidson's junior goalkeeper Mary Grace Bunch.
- Even with a more aggressive offensive look in the second half, the Rams limited the Wildcats to just three total shots in the match
