The short story: Senior
Bradford Webb started and tossed four strong innings for VCU, but Old Dominion rallied in the late frames to top the Rams Tuesday.
Â
FIRST PITCH
- Webb allowed just three hits and one run in four innings of mound work for the Black and Gold. He struck out three and walked a pair
- Freshman lefty Andrew Ward threw two innings of unblemished relief for VCU. He allowed one hit and fanned three
- Junior left fielder Jack Schroeder doubled and drove in two for the Rams. He was 1-for-3 on the day
- Senior first baseman Steven Carpenter collected two hits Tuesday and scored a run for VCU
THE DIFFERENCE
- Old Dominion scored five unanswered runs, including two in the seventh and one each in the eighth and ninth, to slip past VCU
- The Monarchs tied the game in the top of the seventh when Carter Trice ripped a double down the left field line to score a pair. Tommy Bell singled home the go-ahead run for ODU in the top of the eighth. ODU added an insurance run in the top half of the ninth on a Ryan Teschko sacrifice fly
- Old Dominion legged out nine base hits and drew eight walks
- VCU scored all three of its runs in the second inning. Carpenter smacked a leadoff single, and junior catcher Hunter Vay followed with a walk. The next batter, Schroeder, laced a line drive down the left field line to clear the bags. He later moved to third on a balk and scored on a groundout by junior centerfielder Hogan Brown
NOTABLE
- Webb's outing was his longest of the season. He threw 67 pitches
- Ward matched his season's worth of work to date. He had previously thrown a total of 2.0 innings over three appearances
- Carpenter has recorded four multi-hit games in his past seven appearances
